Sony has developed a new touch panel display which offers tactile feedback.
It can detect the x and y coordinates of a fingertip as well as pressure applied in the direction of the z-axis.
Sony will combine the new touch panel with a small display device that resembles a cellphone, where a demonstration showed that different pressure levels applied will affect the speed of switching icons displayed on the screen. Actuators using piezoelectric elements were employed for the tactile feedback function in order to generate the desired results.
